Who’s Behind the Scenes? – Part 1

Alberto "Walas" Ortega

Alberto “Walas” Ortega

Often in our business we do a poor job of giving credit where credit is due and while I try to continuously let my staff know how much I appreciate what they do I find that I fall short doing that as well as I could be. Maybe we get to busy or have to much going on and so over the next 2 weeks during the biggest tournament we have of the year I wanted to take the time to introduce everyone to the guys that make me look good.

Today I would like to introduce you to Alberto “Walas” Ortega. Born in Monterrey, Mexico he has 2 sisters and is married to his wife Elizabeth and has 5 children. Walas has been with the company right at 3 years and started off at the Four Seasons sweeping the shop floors and cleaning. Just before I started here 2 years ago he was starting to help out in the shop doing oil changes and helping our other 2 guys as they needed it. When I arrived I met with all of them and discussed what they wanted to do, where they wanted to go, and how I could help them. Walas said he wanted to learn that he didn’t know a lot but wanted to improve his skills and maybe one day be able to run a course of his own. I was very impressed. Most people try to over sale themselves and he was humble enough to know that he has a lot to learn. So I started out training him on greens mowers. He learned checking the height of cut, he picked up the leveling process rather quickly and learned how to use our SIP grinders. Walas now is in charge of our greens mowers and reel grinding and if you want to know how good of a job he is doing just watch the tournament in 2 weeks and check out the greens. So to put things in perspective in less than 2 years Walas went from sweeping the floor in our shop to preparing greens mowers for a PGA Tour event. There are certain qualities I like to see from my guys and those are patience, good attitude, eye for detail and no short cuts. There is a certain level of trust that has to be there when setting greens mowers. Setting greens mowers up exactly the same everyday and not making mistakes is something Walas takes a lot of pride in. Walas is an asset to me and our team at The Four Seasons and I am expecting big things from him in the years to come.

Here is a video Walas helped me put together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsW3eXtWRX4

Today you have learned about Walas check out next weeks posts on Jose Delgado and Jose Martinez, my other 2 assistants that make us all look good.
